FRUITLAND - The Fruitland Grizzlies didn't just win a championship Wednesday night — they defended one. And they did it in the most dramatic way possible.

In a finish that nobody in attendance will forget anytime soon, the Fruitland Varsity Grizzlies walked off the Homedale Varsity Trojans 4-3 to claim the Snake River Valley Championship for the second year in a row. Nine innings. A tie game in the ninth. A play at the plate that immediately sparked controversy. And a win that cements Fruitland's place at the top of the valley.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fruitland came out swinging early. Nate Grosvenor set the tone in the first inning with an RBI double to put the Grizzlies on the board first. The momentum kept building in the second when Titus Vidlak stepped up and ripped a triple to stretch the lead to 3-0. The Grizzlies looked like they were in control and cruising.

Homedale had other plans.

In the third inning, Bently Holland sent one over the right field wall — a solo shot that got the Trojans on the board. Then Dylan Taylor followed up with an RBI single to make it a one-run game. Just like that, the Trojans had life, and the energy in the park shifted. Taylor finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, quietly putting together one of the better offensive performances of the night for Homedale.

From there, it was a pitchers' duel. The score stayed locked at 3-3, and both teams grinded through the middle innings knowing one mistake could end the season.

THE PLAY THAT DECIDED EVERYTHING

Bottom of the ninth. Tie game. Championship on the line.

Owen Baker reached base and found himself in a rundown — caught in a pickle between third and home. What happened next is going to be debated in Homedale for a long time. Baker slid in, the ump's arms went out, and the call was SAFE. The umpire ruled the catcher missed the tag. One run scored. Ball game. Championship.

Homedale fans were immediately vocal — many in the stands and on the field argued Baker was out by a significant margin and that the call ended the game before it should have. It's the kind of play that stings, especially in a championship setting. But the call stood, Fruitland celebrated, and the Grizzlies are Back-To-Back Snake River Valley Champions. THE GUYS WHO MADE IT HAPPEN

Titus Vidlak deserves his own paragraph. The kid went 2-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate, delivered the go-ahead triple in the second, and then walked out to the mound and threw three innings of scoreless relief — giving up just one hit, striking out two. That is an all-around performance on the biggest stage of the season.

Jarron Whaley also went 2-for-4, and starter Jayden Grosdidier did his job on the hill — six innings pitched, six strikeouts, and he kept the Trojans within reach long enough for the Grizzlies to close it out. Fruitland also turned two double plays on defense, showing up when the pressure was at its highest.

WHAT'S NEXT

For Homedale, the season isn't necessarily over. The Trojans face Cole Valley tonight with a shot at an At-Large bid to Regionals. After a heartbreaking finish like this one, how they respond will say a lot — and there's no question they have the roster to make a run if they come out with the right mentality.

For Fruitland? They're champions. Again.
