Weiser High School’s Claire Matthews Signs with George Fox University

WEISER - Weiser High School senior Claire Matthews has officially signed to continue her athletic and academic journey at George Fox University, taking her talents to the next level in cross country and track.

For those who have watched Claire over the years, this opportunity comes as no surprise.

Head Coach Tristan Kautz shared what so many in the program already know:

“We’re really excited that she’s taking this opportunity to continue her athletic career, especially in running. She’s been one of the hardest-working athletes at Weiser High School—not just in sports, but outside of sports as well. That’s just who she is.

In track and cross country, you get out what you put into it and she’s put a lot into it. We’re all looking forward to seeing her continue that at the next level.”

That message says it all.

Running is one of those sports where there are no shortcuts, just discipline, consistency, and heart. Claire has shown all three, day in and day out.

When Claire spoke, she made it clear this moment wasn’t hers alone, it belonged to everyone who helped her along the way.

She expressed heartfelt gratitude to her first coach, Mr. Cardenas, for encouraging her to run in the very beginning. She thanked Debbie and Brad for being like a second set of parents, and her teammates, Evie, Jackson, Blake, and KJ, for standing beside her.

She also recognized her teachers, counselors, administrators, competitors, and even the media who came out to support her.

“This is such a big opportunity for me, and I’m so excited for it. George Fox… I cannot wait to go and run and see what I can do.”

Claire’s story is about more than just signing day.

It’s about what happens when hard work meets opportunity.

It’s about a young athlete who kept showing up, putting in the work, and trusting the process.

And it’s about a community that showed up right alongside her.

As Claire heads to George Fox University, one thing is certain, this is just the beginning.
